Build one this week

Find the pillar with the weakest fuel

The way to act on all of this is not to build the most impressive magnet you can imagine, it is to build the one your funnel most needs. So start by looking at your four pillars, demand, activation, pipeline, revenue, and find the one with the weakest fuel. Maybe you have plenty of demand-stage content but nothing that turns interest into a named lead, in which case activation is starved. Maybe leads arrive but reach sales un-qualified, in which case pipeline is the gap. Build for the leak you actually have, not the magnet that would look best on your site.

Once you know the pillar, choose the highest finish-a-job format that fits it. The hierarchy is your guide: reach for a tool or calculator first, an assessment second, a template or teardown third, and drop to a guide only if the pillar genuinely calls for teaching rather than finishing, which usually means you are working the demand end. The format and the pillar together fully determine what you should build, so you are not staring at a blank page wondering, you are answering two questions that hand you the answer.

Run the email-price test before you build

Before a single hour goes into construction, run the test that started this guide. Picture a stranger landing on the page, and ask honestly: would they feel they got more than they gave? Would they have clicked even without the gate? If you cannot say yes with confidence, the magnet is overpriced, and no amount of clever popup engineering will rescue a trade the prospect does not want to make. Redesign the offer until it clears the price, because the offer is the lever, and the form is just the mechanism.

This is also the moment to check it is specific enough. A magnet for one named role solving one named problem clears the price far more easily than a comprehensive guide for everyone, because relevance is what makes the trade feel worth it. If your magnet is trying to serve three audiences at once, narrow it to one before you build, not after.

Ship it specific, instant, and instrumented

When you build, hold three properties. Make it specific, aimed at one person and one problem. Make it instant, paying back a personalised result the moment the prospect engages rather than promising something to consume later. And make it qualify, instrumenting the inputs so that using it reveals the firm size, stack, budget, or urgency your next stage needs. These are the three things that separate a magnet that earns the email from one that merely captures it, and AI now lets a solo operator ship all three in roughly a day.

Then measure honestly, against your own sector's median rather than a blanket number. If you are below your industry's benchmark, resist the urge to fiddle with the form, the headline, the button colour. Iterate the offer, because the offer is where the conversion lives. Same form, different magnet, and the number moves, sometimes by a lot. Keep sharpening the bait until you clear your sector's median, and you will have built the thing most of your competitors never do: a lead magnet the prospect thanks you for, instead of one they reluctantly pay for and immediately regret.
