Measure the engine, close the loop
An expansion-signal system is itself a thing to measure, or it quietly decays. Track four numbers continuously: expansion opportunities sourced from usage signals, the time from detection to account-manager outreach, pipeline created versus closed-won revenue, and average contract growth per expansion opportunity (Lusha). Together they tell you whether the signals are firing, whether you are acting fast enough, whether the conversations convert, and whether each win is meaningfully sized.
The detection-to-outreach number is the one to watch hardest because it is the lever you most directly control. Conversion depends partly on the customer and the offer, but latency is pure operations, and shrinking it is how a usage-based approach lifts upgrade conversion from 18 to 34 percent and how team-growth-triggered outreach hits 68 percent win rates against 31 percent for reactive approaches (Saber). Reactive is what you get when the loop is open; proactive is what you get when it is closed.
The loop closes when outcomes retrain the signals. Every expansion that converted, and every one that did not, is evidence about which signals actually predict readiness for your product. If premium-feature attempts convert at 56 percent but storage alerts convert at 12, the weighting should shift toward intent and away from capacity (Saber). The scoring weights are a starting hypothesis, not a fixed truth, and the only way to tune them is to measure conversion by signal type and let the winners earn more weight. This is what separates an expansion-signal system from a one-off dashboard: the system learns, and a learning system is what pushes NRR from 108 to 127 percent durably rather than for one good quarter.
Wire the signals to real backend usage, route them to the moment, score them honestly, split self-serve from sales-assisted by intent, and feed every outcome back in, and expansion stops being a quarterly scramble and becomes the steady compounding force that makes net revenue retention your strongest growth engine.
