Introduction

Vibe coding means building real software by describing what you want in plain language and directing an AI to write the code, rather than typing every line yourself. You can ship production software this way today, and it works: in Y Combinator's Winter 2025 batch, a quarter of startups had codebases that were 95% or more AI-generated. That sounds like a shortcut, and it is the part everyone fixates on. It is also the least interesting part.

The real skill has moved. It is no longer the typing. It is understanding the system you are building well enough to direct the AI, and setting up the context so the AI gets it right the first time. Anyone can prompt. Few people ground the work properly, think in architecture, and debug calmly when it breaks. That gap is where good software still comes from, and it is why a controlled study found AI made some developers 55% faster on a fresh task while a separate study of experienced engineers on mature codebases found them 19% slower. Same tools, opposite results. The difference is method.

This playbook walks the whole build, from the idea to the live product, the way a founder actually does it: choose a stack you will not fight, ground the AI in your real constraints, build the shell before the plumbing, test locally before you touch the cloud, and keep a tight ask-plan-execute loop so you stay in control. It assumes you are not a career engineer and does not pretend you need to be. It does assume you want to ship something real, and keep it running once people depend on it.

One thread runs through everything: building is no longer the moat. When anyone can build, distribution decides who wins. So build fast and clean with the method here, and spend the edge you save on getting people to use what you made.
