Async

Async, short for asynchronous, is a way of working where people exchange information without needing to be present at the same time. Instead of a live meeting or instant back-and-forth, you write a clear message, recording, or document, and the other person responds when it suits them. The opposite, synchronous, requires both parties online together, like a call or real-time chat.

For a lean founder async is a quiet superpower. It lets you work with contractors across time zones, protect long blocks of deep focus, and avoid the constant interruption that calendars full of calls create. The catch is that async only works when communication is genuinely clear: a vague async message just creates a slow loop of clarifying questions. Done well, you write things down once, properly, and they answer questions for many people over time. Default to async for anything that isn't urgent or genuinely needs live debate, and reserve real-time conversation for the few moments it truly earns.
