Bottleneck Resource

A bottleneck resource is the specific person, tool, or piece of capacity whose limited availability sets the ceiling on how much the whole operation can deliver. Where a bottleneck is the limiting step, the bottleneck resource is the scarce thing that step depends on, often the founder themselves in a one-person business, but sometimes a single licence, machine, or specialist contractor that every job has to pass through.

For a lean founder naming the bottleneck resource is uncomfortable but clarifying, because the honest answer is usually "me". Once you see that your own hours are the resource gating growth, the right moves become obvious: stop spending those hours on work a cheaper resource could do, protect them for the work only you can do, and look for ways to remove yourself from the critical path entirely through delegation or automation. Adding capacity anywhere other than the bottleneck resource just creates idle slack. Identify the scarce resource everything queues behind, then guard and offload it deliberately.
