Value Stream
A value stream is the full end-to-end sequence of steps that takes something from initial request to delivered value for the customer, viewed as one continuous flow rather than separate departmental tasks. It deliberately spans the whole journey, including the waiting and the handoffs between steps, not just the moments where active work happens. Mapping it reveals how much of the total time is real work versus things sitting idle in a queue.
For a lean founder this wider lens matters because the biggest delays usually hide in the gaps, not the tasks. A piece of work might take two hours of actual effort but five days to deliver, because it waited in four inboxes along the way. Looking at the whole value stream, instead of optimising one step in isolation, shows you that the win is often removing a handoff or a wait, not making any single step faster. It keeps your improvement effort pointed at the customer's experience of speed, which is what they actually feel.
