Lead magnets: earning the email before the ask

A lead magnet is the trade: you give something genuinely useful, the buyer gives you their contact details and permission to follow up. Done right, it is the most efficient top-of-funnel mechanism a solo founder has — it captures buyers before they are ready to buy, gives you a reason to nurture them, and builds authority at the same time. Done wrong — a PDF checklist that takes two minutes to read and answers nothing the buyer actually needed — it generates a list of people who will never open another email from you.

What makes a B2B lead magnet earn its keep in 2025. The bar has risen because AI has made generic content trivially cheap to produce, which means generic content is now worth nothing. The lead magnets that convert are the ones that deliver something the buyer genuinely cannot get elsewhere: original data, a working tool (a calculator, a template, an audit framework), a process that is hard to reverse-engineer from a summary, or a diagnosis that tells them something specific about their situation. A benchmark report is worth infinitely more than a "top tips" ebook.

A founder running an agency-side analytics tool built a one-page diagnostic that told buyers how their attribution model stacked up against their industry peers, using real anonymised data from her client base. Download rate was 34% of visitors to the page (versus a 5–8% industry average for gated content). The reason was specificity: the output was different for every person who ran it, and it told them something true about their own situation, not a generic insight.

The distribution problem. A lead magnet nobody finds earns nothing. The strongest distribution for a solo founder: a LinkedIn post walking through what you learned building it (post the insight, gate the detail), an SEO-optimised landing page targeting the question the magnet answers, and a mention in your outbound sequences as the second-step nudge for non-responders. Paid amplification of a converting lead magnet is the most defensible use of a small paid budget.

The full framework — what to build, how to test it, how to distribute it — is in Lead magnets that earn the email.
