The AI sandwich: how to use AI without getting bottom-rated

AI is how a solo founder produces volume, but used naively it produces exactly the content Google bottom-rates. The discipline that keeps you on the right side of the line is what I call the AI sandwich: a human front, an AI middle, and a human back. Get the order right and AI is a force multiplier. Skip the bread and you are shipping the filling on its own, which is the precise thing that decays.

The three layers

The human front is the thinking. You bring the angle and the outline, the operator's point of view that no model can generate because it has not lived your business. This is where the unfair angle from Engine 1 enters the page. The AI middle is the typing. Once the angle and structure are set, AI drafts the connective prose at speed, doing the rote work of turning an outline into sentences. The human back is the value. You edit the draft with real data, screenshots, numbers from your own operation and your genuine opinion, the additions that make the page worth citing.

Never ship the bare middle. The unedited AI draft, the filling with no bread, is exactly what Google's January 2025 rater guidelines reserve the lowest rating for, and exactly what decayed to three per cent in the 2,000-article study. The rule is not "ban AI." Google explicitly allows helpful AI-assisted content; it bottom-rates value-free content of any authorship. The sandwich is how you add the value.

A workflow a solo founder can run

In practice the loop runs cleanly with AI agents handling the rote stretches. You pick the query and write the angle yourself, two or three sentences naming what only you know. An AI agent researches the topic and drafts the middle against your outline. You then edit hard, dropping in the screenshot, the real number, the opinion, the moment from your own operation, and cutting anything generic the model padded in. The agent can suggest internal links and generate the schema. You stay in the loop at the two points that matter most: the angle at the front and the proof at the back.

The quality bar

There is one test that settles whether a page is ready, and it is brutally simple. Would a competitor's expert nod at this, or roll their eyes? If someone who actually knows your space would read the page and think "yes, that's right, and that detail is real," you have added value. If they would skim it and recognise generic AI filler dressed up with subheads, you have shipped the bare middle. Hold every page to that bar before it goes live, because the model cannot judge it for you, that judgement is the founder's job and the reason the human bread exists at all.
