Find your one growth bottleneck
Introduction
Your growth is capped right now by exactly one stage of your funnel, and improving any other stage produces zero extra customers until you find and fix that one. That is the whole answer, and the rest of this playbook is about how to locate the binding stage, break it for almost nothing, and keep following it as it moves.
Most founders treat growth as a list of problems to chip away at: the landing page could convert better, the follow-up could be faster, the onboarding could be smoother, the ads could be cheaper. So they spread their effort thin across all of it, feel busy, and wonder why the number barely moves. The mistake is the premise. Growth is not a pile of independent problems to solve in parallel; it is a chain of stages, and a chain breaks at exactly one link.
Your funnel runs demand generation into lead activation into sales pipeline into revenue per client, and at any given moment one of those stages is the constraint that governs the throughput of the whole thing. Improve any other stage and you produce zero extra customers, because the bottleneck still caps the flow. This is the Theory of Constraints, which Eliyahu Goldratt laid out in his 1984 book The Goal, and it transfers cleanly from a factory floor to a growth funnel because the mechanism is identical: any system with a throughput goal has a single limiting step, and the fastest way to grow is to find that step and pour everything into it. The whole discipline is a kind of funnel metrics read with a single question in mind.
For a lean operator running growth with AI agents, this reframe is the whole game. Agents let one person work ten things at once, which sounds like an advantage until you realise it means focus is now the scarce skill, not effort. The temptation to optimise everything in parallel is exactly the trap, because the sum of local optima is not the global optimum.
