AI harness

An AI harness is the scaffolding around a model that turns it from a chat box into a working system: the tools it can call, the context it is fed, the rules it follows, the memory it carries between sessions, and the loop that lets it act, observe the result and try again. The model is the engine; the harness is the car built around it.

This is where most of the real leverage in AI building actually lives. Two teams using the same model get wildly different results because one has invested in a good harness, clear instructions, the right tools wired in, guardrails that catch mistakes, and the other just types prompts.

The examples make it concrete. Say you're automating lead enrichment with n8n: the model on its own can only guess at a company, but wire it into a workflow that pulls the firmographics from Clay, checks your CRM for a match, and writes back a clean record, and now it does real work, because the harness gave it tools, data and a place to put the answer. Or say you're sending lifecycle email through Customer.io: the harness is the rules that decide which segment a contact belongs in, the memory of what you already sent them, and the check that catches a bad send before it goes out.

For a founder building an agentic operation, the harness is the product: it is what lets an agent reliably do real work instead of producing plausible-looking output you have to redo. The principle is to encode the durable parts, rules, tools, memory, into the harness so every task starts strong, rather than re-explaining yourself each time.
