Automation amplifies whatever you point it at, so fix the message first

Automation amplifies whatever you point it at, so fix the message first

Most people reach for automation because they want more volume, and that is exactly the wrong reason to start. If your message does not land when you send it by hand to ten carefully chosen people, sending it to a thousand will not save it. It will burn a thousand prospects, scorch your domain reputation, and teach you nothing useful, because you cannot tell whether the silence is a bad list, a bad message, or a broken sequence.

So I treat automation as a multiplier, never a fix. A multiplier takes what is already working and makes it bigger. Point it at a sharp, relevant, well-targeted message and it compounds your reach. Point it at a vague "I'd love to connect" template and it compounds your damage at machine speed.

The practical rule I follow: nothing gets automated until it has earned its place by hand. Send the first batch yourself, one message at a time, to people you genuinely understand. Watch what gets replies, what gets ignored, and what gets you politely told to go away. That manual phase is your laboratory, and it is cheap. Automation is the factory you build only after the product works.

This also keeps you honest about the real bottleneck. When founders tell me outreach "isn't working", the problem is almost never the tool. It is that the offer is unclear, the targeting is loose, or the first line reads like every other cold email in the inbox. Automation cannot rescue any of those. It can only make them happen faster.

INTERVIEW EWOUD: Tell the story of an outreach campaign (yours or a client's) where you ran a manual batch first, what you learned from the by-hand phase, and how that changed the message before you scaled it.
