Scaling a broken message. The most common trap is automating before anything is proven by hand, so the tool simply distributes a weak message faster. It happens because automation feels like the goal rather than the amplifier. Avoid it by sending manually first, confirming you get replies, and only then turning on volume.
Buying volume over relevance. Founders equate a bigger list with a bigger opportunity and end up with fifty thousand contacts they cannot speak to. It happens because list size is easy to measure and targeting is hard. Avoid it by defining a strict ideal-customer profile and accepting a small, sharp list, because reply rate, not list size, is what fills your pipeline.
Ignoring deliverability until it breaks. People treat sender reputation as a technical detail and discover it only when their emails stop arriving. It happens because deliverability is invisible right up until it collapses. Avoid it by using dedicated warmed-up domains, authenticating them, keeping per-mailbox volume low, and monitoring bounce and complaint rates from day one.
Lazy follow-ups that add no value. The "just bumping this" follow-up trains prospects to ignore you and can read as harassment. It happens because writing a real second angle is harder than scheduling another nudge. Avoid it by giving every message in the sequence its own reason to exist, and by keeping the sequence short.
Automation that does not stop on a reply. Sending a "following up" email to someone who already said yes destroys trust instantly. It happens when reply detection is not wired in or not tested. Avoid it by judging every campaign on positive replies, meetings, and opportunities, and by reading the funnel to find the real bottleneck.
