LinkedIn: the channel that warms everything else

LinkedIn is not primarily a lead generation channel. It is a warm-up channel that makes every other lead generation channel work better. When the buyer who gets your cold email already knows your name from your LinkedIn content, your reply rate does not go up a few percentage points — it can double. That is the case for LinkedIn thought leadership even when it generates zero direct inbound leads.

The 2025 LinkedIn benchmarks:

  • Organic post reach has compressed significantly as the platform has grown, but engagement rates for authoritative content from individuals (as opposed to company pages) remain markedly higher. Average individual-post engagement rate: 1.5–3.5% (Socialinsider, 2025).
  • LinkedIn paid CTR averages 0.5% across ad types, with Sponsored InMail at 0.8–1.2% open rate and 3–10% CTR on the CTA — higher than most email channels but at a cost-per-click that reflects the audience quality.
  • LinkedIn Ads (Sponsored Content) cost-per-lead in B2B SaaS typically runs £60–£120, which is high relative to cold email but justified when the audience targeting is precise and the ICP match is tight.

Building authority with AI. The mistake is asking AI to generate the content wholesale. LinkedIn authority is built on a specific point of view, and AI cannot supply that. What AI can do: help you turn a ten-minute voice note of your thinking into a structured draft, identify which of your ideas have the sharpest framing, repurpose a long-form piece into post formats, and maintain a posting cadence when your schedule is fragmented. A founder running a RevOps tool described posting three times a week for eight months using this approach — AI handles the structural editing, he supplies the opinion — and credited it with warming his outbound list enough that reply rates climbed from 3% to 7% over the same period.

The content types that generate leads on LinkedIn:

  • Point-of-view posts that challenge a common assumption in your ICP's world (these get shared)
  • Process posts showing exactly how you do something the reader also needs to do (these get saved)
  • Before/after posts with real numbers from a client or your own business (these get DMs)
  • Commenting as a strategy: substantive comments on posts your ICP writes, consistently over months, builds a name before any post of yours does
