The fastest way to lose a freshly captured lead is to treat them like everyone else. Someone who just downloaded a beginner's guide is not ready for a demo, and someone who has visited your pricing page three times does not need another beginner's guide. Yet most nurture sequences blast the same generic drip at every contact, which feels like noise to the few who are ready and like irrelevance to the many who are not.
Activation comes from relevance, and relevance comes from knowing where someone is in their thinking. The lead who grabbed a top-of-funnel resource is still defining their problem, so your next touch should sharpen the problem and the stakes, not push the sale. The lead showing buying signals, repeat visits, pricing views, feature pages, is asking to be sold to, so get out of their way and make the next step obvious. Same database, completely different message, because they are in different moments.
You do not need a complex scoring model to start. Begin with two or three simple buckets based on observable behaviour: what they downloaded, what pages they viewed, whether they have engaged before. Segment your follow-up by bucket and you will immediately outperform a single one-size-fits-all sequence. The sophistication can come later; the segmentation should come now.
The deeper principle is that nurture is not about volume of touches, it is about fit. One message that lands because it speaks to exactly where the reader is will activate more leads than ten that ignore it. Before you send anything, ask the only question that matters: given what this person has just done, what is the most useful next thing I could put in front of them?
INTERVIEW EWOUD: What are the behavioural signals you trust most to tell a "still researching" lead apart from a "ready to buy" one? INTERVIEW EWOUD: Walk through a segmentation you set up that was simple but punched well above its weight. What were the buckets, and what changed when you split the message?
