What growth leadership actually is (and what it is not)
Most founders conflate growth leadership with growth tactics. They ask "which channel should I be on?" when the prior question is "what is the engine that compounds for my specific motion?"
Growth leadership is the strategic layer that sits above channels, campaigns, and experiments. It answers four questions on a rolling basis:
- What is the one constraint limiting revenue growth right now?
- Is the growth model I have chosen still the right one for my stage?
- Where in the system does compounding happen, and am I investing there?
- What does the 90-day plan say, and is the weekly rhythm serving it?
Tactics are subordinate to those four questions. A solo founder who can answer them clearly, revisit them on a disciplined cycle, and act on what they find is doing more genuine growth leadership than a ten-person team that never stops to ask them.
The AI-first shift is this: the analytical work those questions require — pulling cohort data, modelling scenarios, diagnosing funnels, running experiment queues — can now be delegated to AI agents. The founder's job is to reason from the output, make the call, and keep the system pointed at the right target. That is a fundamentally different workload than the old model of managing a team of humans who each own one slice of the function.
For the wider operating system that ties all of this together, the Growth operating system playbook is the place to start.
