Bottom-Up Adoption
Bottom-up adoption is when individual employees or small teams start using a product on their own, often for free, and usage spreads organically through the organisation until it reaches a point where the company formalises and pays for it. It's the opposite of top-down selling, where you pitch an executive who mandates a tool from above. Slack, Notion, and Figma all grew this way.
This model is a gift to a lean founder because it sidesteps the long, relationship-heavy enterprise sales cycle entirely, at least at first. A single developer or marketer adopts your tool, gets value, invites colleagues, and the product sells itself inside the account. Your job shifts from convincing buyers to removing friction for users and making the product easy to spread. Sales engages later, only once organic usage has built a beachhead worth converting to a company-wide contract. It turns happy users into your sales force.
