Founder-market fit

Founder-market fit is the match between who you are, your skills, experience, network and obsessions, and the market you've chosen to serve. It's the question of whether you, specifically, are unusually well-suited to win in this space, where most founders would not be.

It matters because building is a long, brutal slog, and the founders who push through tend to have an unfair edge: deep domain knowledge, a relevant audience, lived experience of the problem, or a network that opens doors others have to claw open. Strong founder-market fit means faster trust with customers, sharper product instincts, and the stamina to keep going when it's hard, because you genuinely care about the problem.

The edge usually hides in how you already work. Say you spent years running cold-outreach campaigns in Mailshake and you know exactly where deliverability breaks down, a tool for that pain isn't a guess, it's something you've lived. Say you ran an agency in Asana and watched the same project handoffs fall apart every week, you already know what the fix looks like and which words land with that buyer. Say your whole network records calls in Aircall and trusts your read on the space, that warm list is a distribution head start most founders would kill for.

For a lean founder choosing what to build, this is a real selection criterion, not a vanity check. A great market you have no edge in is a hard fight against people who do. Often the best move is to start where your fit is strongest, even if the market looks less glamorous, because that's where you can win.
