End every call with a scheduled next step, never a "let me follow up"
End every call with a scheduled next step, never a "let me follow up"
The call went brilliantly, you are both energised, and then you close with "great, I will send some thoughts over and follow up next week." You have just killed the momentum you spent thirty minutes building. By next week the prospect is buried in their own work, your conversation is a faint memory, and your follow-up email joins the pile they never answer.
Never leave a good call without a concrete, scheduled next step. Not a promise to follow up, a date in both calendars before you hang up. "Based on what you have told me, the right next step is for me to put together a short proposal and walk you through it with you and your CFO. Can we get thirty minutes on the calendar for next Tuesday?" Book it on the call, while the energy is high and they cannot hide behind their inbox.
The next step should match where the deal actually is, not where you wish it was. If you have not met the economic buyer, the next step is meeting them, not a proposal. If a key question is unanswered, the next step is getting that answer. Match the action to reality and the deal keeps moving on solid ground.
Before you end, summarise what you heard and check it back. "So the core problem is X, it is costing you roughly Y, and the people who need to be on board are A and B. Have I got that right?" This does two things. It proves you listened, which builds enormous trust, and it gives them a chance to correct you before you build a proposal on a misunderstanding.
The deals that stall are almost never lost on price. They are lost in the gaps between calls, where momentum quietly leaks away. Close every gap with a scheduled step and you will be amazed how many more deals simply keep moving.
