The deal didn't stall because of you

You know the feeling. A discovery call goes beautifully, the champion is nodding, the problem is real, and then the deal goes quiet. A week passes, then two. The instinct is to reach for the usual suspects: the price was too high, you misread the fit, the rapport was thinner than it felt. So you draft a softer follow-up, maybe a small discount, and wait. That instinct is almost always wrong, and acting on it makes things worse.

The real number

Matt Dixon and Ted McKenna studied this directly in The Jolt Effect, and the finding reframes everything: somewhere between 40 and 60 per cent of B2B deals in a forecast are lost to no decision, not to a competitor. The buyer did not pick someone else. The buyer picked nobody. And within that no-decision pile, roughly 56 per cent of the losses come from buyer indecision, the fear of choosing wrong, while 44 per cent come from sticking with the status quo. Your competitor, in other words, is mostly the buyer's own inertia.

That changes the job. If half your slipping deals are being lost to paralysis rather than to a rival, then sharpening your pitch, dropping your price, or sending a warmer email is solving the wrong problem. None of those moves address the thing actually killing the deal, which is that the buyer cannot see the path forward and has frozen in front of it.

Why the freeze happens

Modern B2B buying is a committee sport. A complex purchase now pulls in six to ten stakeholders, each of them independently gathering four to five separate sources of information before they will commit. Worse, around 95 per cent of buying groups pivot at least once when fresh information lands. So your champion is not making a decision. Your champion is trying to herd a shifting committee towards a decision, with no map, while quietly terrified of being the person who signed off on the wrong thing.

Nobody owns that coordination problem. The seller assumes the champion has it handled. The champion assumes the process will sort itself out. And so the deal sits, not because anyone said no, but because nobody could see what happened next.

The thesis

This is exactly the gap a mutual action plan fills. It is not a closing trick and it is not your internal pipeline dressed up for the buyer. It is the buyer's own path to yes, written down, co-owned, and reverse-engineered from the date they need to be live. It names every step, every owner on both sides, and every date, so the committee has the map it was missing and the champion has cover for the decision they were afraid to make.

The rest of this guide is how you build that plan and how you run it. But hold onto the reframe first, because it determines everything downstream: the deal in your pipeline that went quiet last week did not stall because of you. It stalled because the buyer could not see what happens next, and you never handed them the map.
