What a lean founder should take from this

Five things, in order of how much money they save you.

1. Start free, pay on proof. With 58% of priced tools carrying a free tier, your default move is to stand up the whole stack at zero and upgrade a line only when volume forces it. A tool that has not yet hit its free-tier ceiling has not yet earned its invoice.

2. Self-select out of the spike. The £99 mean is a mirage created by six enterprise categories — ad management, data pipelines, customer-success seats. If you are not running large paid budgets or covering big-ticket accounts, you live in the £20-median world. Do not let a category's headline price scare you off when its entry is free.

3. Buy the median, not the brand. Most categories have a tool at or near the £20 median that does 90% of what the £200 leader does. The premium tiers are sold on scale features and seat counts you do not yet have. Match the tool to your current size and re-evaluate at each ceiling — the CRM Pricing & Feature Benchmark and the Email Marketing Platform Pricing Benchmark show exactly how little you give up by choosing the median.

4. Hold the line on tooling as a percentage of revenue. A healthy lean stack stays at roughly 2 to 4 per cent of revenue as you scale. If it is creeping toward double digits, you have either bought into the enterprise spike too early or you are paying for seats you do not use. Watch the ratio, not the absolute number.

5. Spend the saving on the operating model, not on headcount. The £330,000 a year you are not spending on a five-person team is the budget that buys an agentic operating system — one operator orchestrating across all fifty categories. That is the actual trade this data describes. The tools were always affordable. What changed is that you no longer need to hire five people to run them.

The number to remember: £20 median, 58% free, 50 categories, one operator. That is the shape of a modern growth function, and the spreadsheet has stopped being close. For the end-to-end version of how those pieces fit together, read The growth machine, end to end.
