Throughput
Throughput is the amount of finished work a process actually produces in a given period, completed orders per week, customers onboarded per month, tickets resolved per day. It measures real output crossing the finish line, not how busy everyone looks or how much is in progress. A business can feel frantic and still have low throughput if work piles up unfinished.
For a lean founder throughput is the honest scoreboard, because it's tied directly to the constraint. Total throughput is set by the bottleneck, so you can only raise it by improving that one limiting step, not by working harder everywhere. It's also a healthier target than utilisation: pushing every person and tool to be 100 percent busy actually chokes throughput, because a fully loaded system has no slack to absorb variation and work jams up. Watch finished output, find what's capping it, and resist the temptation to measure activity instead. More motion is not more throughput, and only completed work counts.
